STAR Assessments for Reading and Math

The STAR assessment is a computer-adaptive test designed to measure student's growth in reading and math. The test selects questions from a large pool, making each question more or less difficult based on the student's answer to the previous question.  STAR results will provide a picture of your child's current abilities, as well as a list of suggested skills you may want to focus on.

STAR Early Literacy (Kindergarten-Grade 2)

Designed for beginning readers who do not yet read independently or need early literacy skills assessed. The test provides audio instruction and takes about 15 minutes to complete.

STAR Reading (Grade 3 - Grade 8)

Designed for independent readers. The test covers 49 reading skill areas across five domains, including analyzing literary text, word skills, and comprehension strategies. Students should be able  to complete this assessment in less than 30 minutes.

STAR Math (Grade 1 - Grade 6*)

STAR Math covers various math domains including number sense, operations, algebra, geometry, measurement, and data analysis. Audio instruction is available.  Completion of this assessment may take between 20-30 minutes.

  • Parents may request a STAR Math assessment for students in grade 7-8 if concerned about their progress.

Accelerated Reader Quizzes: How does it work?

Read Books, Take Quizzes, Earn Prizes!

Students who have completed their STAR Early Literacy (K-2) or STAR Reading (3-8) assessments have access to Accelerated Reader (AR) quizzes!

Read Books: Accelerated Reader has quizzes that build comprehension, vocabulary, and literacy skills for tens of thousands of books. Quizzes may be taken on books read independently or for our younger students, books that were read with or to them. You can check if a book you are reading has a quiz or search for a new title based on your reader’s ability and interest at AR Book Finder.

Take Quizzes: Readers have access to AR quizzes on campus or at home. Be sure you are logging on to the Home Education Exchange  home page or your user name will not be recognized. Quizzes should be taken within 24 hours of finishing the book.

  • Reading Practice (RP) - Short, multiple-choice quizzes that students take after reading a book to assess their comprehension:
  • Literacy Skills (LS) - Assess 24 reading comprehension skills covered in state standards, basal reading series, and standardized tests. Literacy Skill quizzes are available for select titles in all grade levels.
  • Vocabulary (VP) - Help students learn new words and understand vocabulary encountered in the books they are reading

Recorded Voice Quizzes are available for emergent and beginning readers. Students can  listen to a  recording of each quiz question and the answer choices. Because students hear the words as they appear on the screen, they can take the quizzes independently.

Earn Prizes: Students participating in Accelerated Reader earn points that may be used in the AR Store during select weeks. How to earn points …

  • Reading Practice Quizzes - Points are awarded for RP quizzes based on the length and difficulty of the book, as well as the number of correct answers. Results of less than 70% do not receive points. RP points are recorded immediately after completing a quiz.
  • Vocabulary  Quizzes - Add words to your Vocabulary Bank. Readers earn a point for every 10 words they “banked” during the school year. Points are awarded before the final AR Store opening in June.
